South Mountain CC Baseball Sweeps Western Nebraska CC

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (20-8) swept a home doubleheader with Western Nebraska Community College on Mar 10. SMCC pitching limited WNCC to five hits over the 14 innings of action while the Cougar offense totaled 14 runs and six extra-base hits in the 9-0 and 6-0 victories.

In game one, Jake Sansing threw six innings and allowed two hits to go with five strikeouts. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning when Western Nebraska CC finally broke through with a two-out single.  Israel Gutierrez finished the game for SMCC with a clean seventh inning.

Dustin Bermudez and Efrain Cervantes both hit home runs in the victory. Bermudez finished 1 for 2 with two runs, two RBIs and two walks. He smashed a solo shot in the bottom the second for his second home run of the season.

Cervantes hit a two-run home run, his first of the season, in the bottom of the first that scored Bermudez. He added a double and finished 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs.

Justin Quinn and Davis Heller each had two hits in the victory. Quinn recorded a double and a stolen base while Heller also drew a walk. Easton Erwin had two RBIs, and Ricky Munoz and Brendan Blakeman each scored a run.

The second game saw Bermudez scatter two hits over six innings to go with three strikeouts. Tyler Magin tossed the seventh inning and allowed one hit with one K.

At the plate, Holden Breeze went 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Erwin went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs. Michael Quinones added a double, and Noah Bachman and Jake Haze each had a base hit.

The Cougars broke a scoreless tie with a four-run third inning. Brodie Marino and Bachman scored on an error by the pitcher, and Breeze later came home on a wild pitch. Erwin then collected an RBI single to score JD Wadleigh.

Wadleigh grounded into a fielder's choice in the fourth to score Mason Skaugrud, and Erwin cranked a triple in the sixth to score Breeze.

The victories gave SMCC 14 wins in its final 15 games of the 2020 season.
