Northeastern JC men never trail in 99-73 win over MCC

STERLING, Colo. Northeastern Junior College led wire-to-wire Tuesday and remain undefeated in Region IX south play with a 99-73 win over the McCook Community College men.

"We have to learn what it takes to be a real basketball player," said MCC Coach Kyle Drennan. "It's not about scoring, steals or dunks. It's about rebounding, getting 50-50 balls, diving on the floor and all the little things."

The Plainsmen led 50-30 at the half and outscored MCC 52-32 in the paint with five players scoring in double figures.

"This isn't high school or AAU any more," Drennan said. "This is a level where everyone is talented and all the little things that are not as cool or fun, are the difference between winning and losing."

Sophomore transfer Tyrik Singh (San Juan, Trinidad and Tobago) Daytona State led all MCC scorers with 16 points, on a seven-for-eight night from the floor. Freshman LeTre Darthard (Denton, Texas) scored 15 points and led the Indians with seven rebounds. He was four-for-four from the field and six for nine from the free throw line.

Raheim Sullivan (Toronto, Ontario), a sophomore transfer from Moberly Area Community College put in 15 points, on a five-for-six night shooting from the field and four of five from the line. Sophomore transfer Justin Costello (Elkhorn South High School/Nebraska) scored 12 points.

MCC shot 61.8 percent from the field, 41.7 percent on 12 3-point attempts and 26 of 35 from the free throw line.

The Plainsmen shot 66.1 percent from the field, made 11 of 24 3-pointers and made 10 of 15 free throws. NJC out-rebounded MCC 27-18

Northeastern improves to 17-6 overall and 7-0 in the south division of Region IX.

MCC falls to 9-13 and 1-6 in the south division.

On Friday MCC is back in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center to face Western Nebraska (15-7, 5-2), at 7:30 p.m. and then host Central Community College (13-10) Saturday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. for the annual Blue-Out games to raise money and awareness for children with disabilities. MCC spring royalty will also be announced at that game.
