WNCC baseball picks up two wins over Miles at home

                Jack Pauley delivered two home runs and the Western Nebraska Community College baseball team swept a doubleheader from Miles Community College Saturday afternoon at Cleveland Field.

                In the opener, Bradley Brown went six strong innings and the only offense the Cougars needed was a Pauley solo shot in the fourth to claim the 1-0 win.

                Game two was an offensive show on the part of the Cougars, finishing with 13 hits include home runs from Pauley and Oscar Perez to claim the 20-4 win.

                Both teams will be back at Cleveland Field on Sunday for another doubleheader as the Cougars hope to even their record. WNCC is 2-4 on the season.

                The first game was a defensive gem. Brown allowed just three hits in his six innings of work, while striking out seven Beau Lofink finished out the contest, tossing the seventh and allowing a hit to register the save.

                The Cougars managed just six hits in the opener. Besides Pauley's fourth-inning solo shot, Isaac Block and Matt Maestas each had a double.

                The second game was a totally different game from the first. WNCC came out hitting the ball, tallying 13 hits and six that went for extra bases.

                WNCC struck first in the second inning, plating nine runs on just four hits. Alex Achterman got the first double with a 2-run double for a 5-0 lead. Austin Michaud followed with a single followed by a 3-run home run by Pauley. Ty Benson finished off the second-inning scoring with a run-scoring double for the 9-0 lead.

                WNCC added two more runs in the third as Ryan Grasser led off with a double before Oscar Perez delivered a monster 2-run home run for the 11-1 lead.

                WNCC added three more runs in the fourth to make it 14-1 with three straight singles by Perez, Achterman, and Michaud.

                Miles plated two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to slice the lead to 14-4 before WNCC plated six runs on four hits in the sixth. Michaud had the big hit with a 2-run double, while Stuart Eurich and Ty Benson each had run-scoring singles.

                WNCC had two players finish with three-hit games. Achterman and Michaud each had three hits on four at bats. Both hitters had a double with three RBIs and two runs scored.

                Oscar Perez also had two hits with a home run, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Benson also tallied two hits with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

                Pauley had one hit in the second game to go with his three RBIs and run scored.

                Brian Kelley picked up the win on the mound, going 4 2/3 innings with six hits, three runs scored and four strikeouts. Ian Fisher tossed 1 1/3 innings with two hits, a run scored and a strikeout. Jose Mongo finished out the game, tossing the seventh with a strikeout.
