WNCC baseball falls to Mesa

PHOENIX — The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team dropped a 14-4 setback to Mesa Community College on Friday afternoon in Phoenix.

WNCC started things on the right track, scoring two in the first on just one hit. Mesa, however, came back with three in the second and then scored at least a run in the next five innings. Mesa scored six runs in the seventh inning to break things open and go on for the win.

WNCC finished the game with seven hits. Seven different players accounted for a hit for the Cougars. Oscar Perez led WNCC with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. He also drew a pair of walks. Landon Urban, Jack Pauley and Matt Maestas all drove in one run each. Ty Benson and Alex Achteman had one steal each.

Brian Kelley took the loss on the mound. He allowed six earned runs on 10 hits and struck out two in six innings.

WNCC, now 8-14 on the season, will face Seminole Junior College Saturday at noon. The same two teams will meet again on Sunday at 2 p.m.
