WNCC baseball team at home this weekend

The Western Nebraska Community College will open the home portion of their schedule this weekend when they host Miles Community College in a doubleheader Saturday and Sunday.

First pitch for both days at Cleveland Field in Scottsbluff is slated for 12 noon for the non-Empire Conference battle.

WNCC opened the season last weekend at Garden City Community College falling in all four games, while Miles will be playing its first games of the season.

WNCC is looking to improve in this weekend's games after being outscored 41-10 by Garden City. Angel Cortes will get the nod to start game one while Jacob Pekol will get the start for game two on Saturday. Sunday's starters will be Alex Achtermann and Claude Bova.

The Cougars have three players hitting over .350 for the season. Brandon Maher leads the team with a .500 batting average followed by Scottsbluff's Ty Benson at .417. Stuart Eurich is next at .375.

Benson is having a decent start. Last week, the former WESTCO Zephyr finished with three RBIs with four singles and a triple. He leads the team in RBIs.

After this weekend, the Cougars will begin Empire Conference play when they travel to Northeastern Junior College on Feb. 24. The next home games will be March 5 when Colorado State Club will come to Cleveland Field.

The contests will also be available online at wnccathletics.com or on WNCC athletic's The Cube video site at WNCC Athletics.
