WNCC baseball falls to Garden City

                COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team had a couple close games with Garden City Community College to open the season, but dropped both contests Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

                The first game was a pitcher's dual that saw Garden City score once in the first inning and then hold on for the 1-0 win.

                The second contest saw Garden City score five times in the third inning to register the 7-2 win.

                Both squads will be back in action for another doubleheader Sunday.

                The opener saw the two pitchers go toe-to-toe. WNCC's Zach Berg went five strong innings in allowing four hits and just one run while striking out three. Garden County had a strong pitching performance from Eri Heiman, who went six innings in allowing three hits while striking out five.

                All the runs needed occurred in the first inning when Sean Klein tripled and scored on a Corbin. Truslow single.

                WNCC had a chance to score the tying run in the fourth when Dermot Fritsch led off with a double but was left stranded at third.

                WNCC also had two runners on in the sixth but couldn't get a base hit to score the tying run.

                Fritsch had the only extra base hit with the other two singles from Brevin Owen and Amoldo Maltos Garcia.

                The second game was another close contest. WNCC scored once in the first on three hits. Luis Alcantara singled and Brevin Owen doubled to lead off the inning. Alcantara scored on a Hunter Nelson groundout for the 1-0 lead.

                The Cougars also scored a single run in the third on no hits. Owen scored on a fielding error.

                Garden City scored five times in the third on just two hits. Garden City added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth inning.

                John Betsch led the offense with two hits, including a double.

                Kale Litzelman took the loss, tossing four innings in giving up five runs and three hits while striking out five. Devin DeBoer went two innings allowing two runs while Wellington Mariano went one inning.
