WNCC baseball fall In high-scoring games

                COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team had plenty of offense on Sunday, but Garden City Community College had just a little bit more in registering the doubleheader sweep over WNCC Sunday afternoon in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

                The first game saw WNCC jump to a 4-2 lead only to watch Garden City score seven times in the fourth for an 11-4 win.

                The second game saw the two squads combine for 20 run and 22 hits while Garden City scored seven times in the sixth to register the 12-8 win.

                The first game saw WNCC jump to a 4-2 lead after scoring four times in the second. WNCC loaded the bases and then Anroldo Maltos-Garcia singled in the first run. Austin Abbott followed with a 2-run single to put WNCC up 3-2. Maltos-Garcia scored the fourth run for the 4-2 lead.

                The lead didn't hold up as Garden City scored single runs in the third and sixth and seven times in the fourth for the final margin.

                WNCC was led at the plate by Harrison Yates and Arnoldo Maltos-Garcia with two hits each, including a double. Austin Abbott finished the game with two RBIs.

                Nate Kolb took the loss, going three innings in allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out two. Chandler Young tossed two innings in giving up three hits and three runs. Mitch Mullen also tossed an inning in allowing two hits and a run.

                The second game was a high-scoring affair. WNCC had a pair of four-run innings to grab an 8-5 lead through 5 ½ innings.

                WNCC scored four times in the fourth on seven hits. It all started with three straight singles by John Betsch, Dermot Fritsch and Mitch Osborne to load the bases. Ethan Q Miller then singled home the first run followed by Hunter Nelson delivering a 2-run single for a 3-1 lead. Hayden Seibers finished off the scoring with a 2-out single for the 4-1 lead.

                Garden City came back with four runs of their own in the fourth for a 5-4 lead. WNCC responded with four runs in the sixth on four hits. The big hits in the frame included a 3-run triple by Betsch and a run-scoring double by Fritsch for the 8-5 lead.

                Garden City responded with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 12-8 lead.

                WNCC outhit Garden City 12-10. Osborne led the attack with three singles with a run scored. Betsch and Fritsch each had two hits. Betsch had a triple with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Fritsch had a double with a run scored and RBI.

                Nelson also finished with two RBIs.

                Elliot McNeave took the loss in relieve. McNeave went just two-thirds innings allowing three hits and six runs. Kyler Harris started and went four innings before giving up six hits and five runs. Brandon Rollinson and Ty McAninch also saw time on the mound.

                WNCC, 0-4, is scheduled to open the home portion this weekend when they host Miles Community College Saturday and Sunday, weather depending. Stay tuned to the WNCC athletic website and Facebook for updates on the home game.
