WNCC baseball captures two, one-run wins over Miles

                LAJUNTA, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team registered two, one-run wins in taking a doubleheader from Miles Community College on Saturday in LaJunta, Colorado.

                The opener saw Luis Alcantara get a bases loaded walk-off single to score the winning run to give the Cougars the 6-5 win.

                The second game saw WNCC score four early runs and then hold on for the 5-4 win.

                The first game was a dog fight with Miles holding a 5-4 lead heading into the seventh.

                The Cougars' rally started when Harrison Yates and Michael Pelton earned back-to-back walks. Ty McAninch followed with a no-out double to score the tying run. After Matt Womack was intentionally walked to load the bases, Alcantara came through with a full-count single to score the winning run.

                `Miles and WNCC each had 10 hits. The Cougars was led by the 2-hit attack of Pelton and Brevin Owen. Yates had a double with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Mitch Osborne and McAninch each had a double.

                Mitch Mullen picked up the win, tossing the seventh. Nate Kolb started and went 3.2 innings in allowing five runs and striking out one. Chandler Young went 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.

                The second game saw WNCC outhit Miles 10-5 with all singles. The Cougars started with four in the first on four hits. Osborne started things with a run-scoring single and Braden Lofink closed out the inning with a 3-run single for the 4-0 lead.

                Miles came back with three in the top of the second, but WNCC added a single run in the second for the 5-3 lead.

                The Cougars pitching staff then allowed just one run over the next five innings to get the win.

                John Betsch and McAninch each had two hits. Osborne had two RBIs in the game, while Lofink had three RBIs.

                Garrett DeClue picked up the win in relieve of Kyler Harris. DeClue went 2.1 innings while allowing two hits and striking out three. Harris started and went 1.2 innings in giving up three runs and striking out one.

                Also seeing action on the hill were Wellington Mariano and McAninch. McAninch earned the save in striking out three in his inning of work.

                WNCC will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Barton Community College for doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday.
