Roub scores 27 in win over Colby

COLBY, Kan. – Martin Roub scored 27 and the No. 14 Western Nebraska Community College men's basketball team went on the road and picked up a 96-86 win over Colby Community College Tuesday night in Colby, Kansas.

The win was the Cougars third straight and moves WNCC to 6-2 on the season.

WNCC head coach Cory Fehringer said it was a good win on the road for his squad, who defeated Colby 88-85 at Cougar Palace two weeks ago.

"Road wins are tough to come by in competitive athletics," Fehringer said. "It becomes more unpredictable playing teams from different regions and new gyms. Thankful for the growth we are showing."

WNCC put five players in double figures and that was something that really pleased Fehringer.

"It was nice to see the ball find a few more open plyers," he said. "We had five in double digits. As well as a big night from Martin from the floor and Jervay [Green] from the glass. Henry [Tanksley] Elie [Cadet] and Bryce [Sanchious] are finding ways to affect the game in new ways."

Roub led all scorers with 27 points including 12 of 17 from the field with two 3-pointers.

University of Nebraska recruit Jervay Green finished with a double-double in the game. Green finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Green hit three 3-pointers and had five assists.

Also netting double figures was Dru Kuxhausen with 16 points and two treys, Henry Tanksley with 14 points, and Bryce Sanchioius with 12.

WNCC held a 51-40 lead at halftime and a big key in the 11-point lead was shooting. WNCC shot 54 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes with seven 3-pointers. The Cougars finished the game shooting 58 percent for the game.

Defense was a big factor in the contest as well. The Cougars held Colby to just 40 percent shooting in the first half and 41 percent for the game. The Trojans buried just 8 of 28 3-pointers.

WNCC won the battle on the boards 38-35. After Green's 12 boards, Kuxhausen had six rebounds, while Sanchious and Roub each had five.

WNCC had five blocked shots in the win, from Roub and one each from Sanchious, Tanksley, and Elie Cadet.

WNCC will be back in action this weekend when they host the Thanksgiving Classic with the men and women hosting four teams. The Cougar men will face No. 12 Indian Hills at 7:30 p.m. on Friday before hosting Rainy River Community College at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Rainy River contest will have an interesting twist as Cougar assistant coach Billy Engel's dad, Bill, is the head coach of Rainy River.

Trinidad State Junior College will also compete, facing Rainy River on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and Indian Hills at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Cougar women will also compete on both days in the tournament, facing Trinidad State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and the Nebraska All-stars at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
