Billy Engel just finished his second year as the head coach at WNCC and the Cougars made it to the Region IX semi-finals before falling. Engel has been at WNCC for the past five years, the first three as an assistant coach which included helping the Cougars to a Region IX title in 2018. Engel's overall record is 25-25, but that included a shortened COVID season in 2020-21.

Engel grew up in Cooperstown, North Dakota, and went on to play basketball at Dakota College-Bottineau and the Dickinson State in North Dakota. Engel played the 2013-14 season at Dakota College where he averaged 6.7 points a game and starting 31 of 33 games. He made 31 3-pointers that season and shot 90 pecent from the free throw line (54-of-60). At Dickinson in 2015-16, Engel averaged 4.8 points a game while shooting 90.2 percent from the free throw line (37-of-41).
