WNCC men top Sheridan for third straight victory

The Western Nebraska Community College men's soccer team scored three, second-half goals in coming back to down Sheridan College 3-1 on Saturday at a windy and cold Landers Soccer Complex.

Matheus Lima scored two of the goals to help the Cougars to their third straight conference win.

            Lima said they played well.

"I think we did a great job," the freshman from Brazil said. "We kept pressure the whole time. We had to come back and we got the win. We got two wins this weekend and we are back in the tournament hunt. They did a great job."

Both teams went scoreless in the first half. Sheridan struck first with 28 minutes left to play in the match when Rylan Mocko scored. WNCC wasted little time in getting the equalizer, as Lima took a pass from Ygor Brita to score just two minutes later.

Lima put the Cougars in front 10 minutes later on unassisted goal as he scored to put the Cougars up 2-1.

With how tight the two teams were playing, a one goal lead wasn't safe. Omar Sissoko changed that with just under six minutes to play as he had an unassisted goal for the 3-1 lead. WNCC had a couple other chances to add to the lead late, but came up short.

WNCC outshot Sheridan 11-4 and had more corner kicks than the Generals 5-3.

Ruam Barbosa had 10 saves in net.

The WNCC men moved to 3-2 in conference play and climbed to 6-4 overall. The Cougar men will host Laramie County Community College on Friday at 4 p.m.
