WNCC softball sweeps Garden City

                GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The Western Nebraska Community College softball team put together timely hitting in taking a doubleheader from Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas, on Thursday.

                In the opener, Emma McMillan tossed a 4-hit shutout as the Cougars earned an 8-0, six-inning win over the Broncbusters. The second game saw WNCC get 12 hits in earning the 12-4, six-inning victory.

                The opener saw WNCC score early and then plate five runs in the fifth inning for a 7-0 lead. Mickie Mills started the scoring with a solo home run in the first. Mills then delivered a run-scoring double in the third for the 2-0 lead.

                Sidnee Hogan started off the fifth with a solo home run. WNCC added four runs after that in the frame on just two hits for the 7-0 lead.

                WNCC made it 8-0 in the sixth when Mills scored on an error.

                WNCC managed eight hits in the contest. Mills led the way with two hits with a home run and a double. The freshman also had two RBIs and two runs scored. Hogan also had a home run in the win, while Devon Rees had a double.

                McMillan picked up the win in the circle, going six innings in scattering four hits and walking four.

                The second game saw WNCC score nine runs early to help earn the win. WNCC scored single runs in the first and second. The big hit in the second was a run-scoring triple by McMillan for the 2-0 lead.

                Garden City came back to tie the game at 2-2, but WNCC added seven runs in the third to go up 9-2. WNCC scored the seven runs on just four hits. Hogan and Michaela Kelly had run scoring singles, and McMillan had a 2-run double.

                WNCC put the game away in the sixth. Kelly started things with a one-out triple and scored on a first-pitch double by Madi Simons. Simons came around to score after Abriana Ramirez doubled to make it 11-4 and Ramirez came around to score on a passed ball to make the lead eight runs, 12-4.

                WNCC pounded out 12 hits with McMillan finishing with three hits. McMillan had a single, double, and triple to go along with three RBIs.

                Collecting two hits each were Hogan, Kelly, and Simons. Kelly had a triple with two RBIs and two runs scored while Simons had a double and three runs scored.

                Mills picked up the win in the circle, going six innings in allowing six hits and just four runs. Mills also struck out four and didn't walk a batter.

                WNCC, 4-4, will be back in action Friday with another doubleheader with Garden City Community College.
