WNCC splits with Lamar on Saturday

                LAMAR, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College softball team split a conference doubleheader with Lamar Community College on Saturday in Lamar, Colorado.

                The opener saw Lamar scored four runs in the seventh to earn the walk-off 9-7 win.

                The second game saw WNCC's offense come alive with 16 hits with five doubles and two home runs in registering the 5-inning 16-4 win.

                The opening game of the 4-game series was a thriller. Lamar struck first with two runs in the first and second for a 4-0 lead. WNCC responded with two in the third and four in the fifth to grab a 6-4 lead.

                Mickie Mills started the scoring in the third with a solo home run. Michaela Kelly followed with a 2-out triple and scored on a Bri George double to cut the deficit in half.

                WNCC tied the game in the fifth on a 2-run single by Kelly and then a couple batters later took their first lead of the game with two more runs for a 6-4 lead.

                Lamar cut the lead to one, 6-5, with a single run in the sixth. WNCC answered with a single run in the seventh to hold a 7-5 lead. Lamar plated four runs in the last inning all with one out to earn the win.

                WNCC finished with 10 hits in the contest. Mills led the way with a 4-for-4 day with two doubles, a home run, and three runs scored. Kelly finished with three hits, including a triple, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Emma Glawson tallied two hits, including a double. George also had a double along with two RBIs.

                WNCC earned the split on the day with a dominating performance in game two by scoring runs in the second through fifth inning to get the win.

                Lamar scored first in the second contest with a run in the opening inning. After that it was all Cougars, scoring three times in the second a run-scoring double by Glawson, and run-scoring singles by Mills and Kelly for the 3-1 lead.

                WNCC added six more in the third on six straight hits all with two outs. Sam Davis started the rally with a 2-out single. Abriana Ramirez scored the first run with a single to plate Davis. Glawson followed with a 2-run single. Mills followed with a 2-run double before Devon Rees finished off the scoring with a 2-run home run to right field and the 9-1 lead.

                WNCC added five in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 16-1 lead. All the runs in the fourth came with two outs. George started the inning with a double. Then, after two outs, Sidnee Hogan singled home George. Glawson followed with a run-scoring double. Mills then cleaned the bases with a 3-run home run to left field and the 14-1 lead.

                The Cougars two runs in the fifth came on just two hits. The big one was a run-scoring double by Hogan that scored Davis.

                WNCC had five players with three hits each. Mills had three hits with a double, home run, six RBIs, and two runs scored from her lead-off batting position. Kelly had three singles with an RBI, while Hogan had a double, three runs scored, and two RBIs, Ramirez had three singles with three runs scored and an RBI, and Glawson had three hits including two doubles, three runs scored, and three RBIs.

                George had two hits in the contest with a double. Devon Rees had the other extra base hit with a home run.

                Glawson picked up the win in the circle, going five innings while scattering eight hits in allowing four runs.

                WNCC and Lamar will be back in action Sunday with another conference doubleheader in Lamar, Colorado.
