WNCC women capture 10th straight

SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Merle Wiehl scored 30 points and the Western Nebraska Community College women's basketball team captured their 10th straight win with a 101-72 win over Central Wyoming College Friday in Sheridan, Wyoming.

Wiehl poured in 30 points, including burying six 3-pointers in helping the Cougars go to 11-2 on the season. Wiehl has now scored in double figures in all 13 games for the Cougars and now has scored double figures in 35 straight games for WNCC. It was the second time this season the 6-foot-1 sophomore has netted 30 points.

The Cougars had little doubt in the outcome in rolling to a 30-7 lead after the first quarter and holding a 53-34 lead at halftime.

WNCC outscored the Rustlers 30-19 in the third quarter in leading 83-53.

Shooting was the difference in the contest. WNCC shot 61 percent from the field, including burying 12 3-pointers. The Cougars had six treys in each half. Wiehl had half of the 3-pointers, while Taylor Joplin buried three.

The Cougars defense was just as stellar, holding Central Wyoming to 40 percent shooting. The Rustlers made just seven treys.
