A day after falling to Gillette College, the Western Nebraska Community College women's soccer used a 2-0 shutout performance Saturday against Sheridan College in windy and cold temperatures.
The Cougars scored a goal in each half to improve to 8-2 on the season.
Caroline Vieira, who had both assists on the goals, said they played much better than Friday against Gillette.
"We played very organized, and we had a good communication," the sophomore said. "We put all our efforts in the game today, which makes a lot difference."
Friday, the Cougars allowed Gillette to score three second-half goals to get the win. That wasn't about to happen Saturday.
"This win was necessary to bring our confidence and a good environment back," she said. "They [WNCC scorers Destiny Mueller and Karla Pereya] are both amazing player and we all feel so happy seeing them score."
Better yet, the Cougars pitched a shutout on the pitch. It was the Cougars sixth shutout of the season in 10 games.
"The defense was perfect," Vieira said. "They were very connected, and we stayed focused the whole game."
WNCC scored first with over 27 minutes to play in the first half when Vieira delivered a free kick to the box and Gering's Destiny Mueller headed into the goal for the 1-0 lead.
The lead stayed that way until the second half. WNCC got an insurance goal with 10 minutes to play. Vieira picked up her second assist as she found Karla Peyera for the goal and the 2-0 lead.
WNCC outshot Sheridan 11-9 but the Generals had more corner kicks 8-2.
Laramie Lake managed six saves in net for the Cougars.
WNCC will be back in action Friday when they host No. 4 Laramie Community College at 1:30 p.m. Vieira said this team is getting better, but they have keep pushing.
"We are getting better each game and we are proving to ourselves how good we are," she said. "It's important to not give up and keep it up, because we still have hard games coming. But so far, I'm so proud of this team."
