Western Nebraska Community College's Destiny Mueller has a flair for the dramatics.
The former Gering Bulldog netted two goals, including the overtime winner to give the Cougar women a 2-1 win over defending Region IX champions Western Wyoming Community College Saturday afternoon at the Landers Soccer Complex.
Mueller said the team played well today, especially defensively in allowing just seven shots by the Mustangs compared to 17 for the Cougars.
"The team played really well today," the freshman said. "We had a lot of defense and we were switching the ball around which was good. We passed really well and worked as a team.
Mueller's two goals were golden, especially after the Cougars fell to No. 4 Laramie County Community College on Friday 1-0, where the team struggled getting the ball in the back of the net. Mueller said while she scored twice, she couldn't have done it without her teammates.
"I feel really relieved that I could help my team out and get the two goals," she said. "But without then I could never get my goals. So, I am really thankful for them and all the hard work they do."
There wasn't a lot of scoring in the match all game. WNCC struck first as Mueller scored off a pass from Caroline Vieira just 15 minutes into the contest.
That seemed as if that would be the final score as the Cougars held a 1-0 lead and dominated play defensively in the second half. However, Western Wyoming scored a goal with 2:12 to play in regulation from Hayden Rupe to force overtime.
The overtime period didn't take long as Mueller took a pass from Bethany Fuchs and planted it into the back of the net for the game-winner.
Both teams managed just one corner kick in the contest in the defensive contest.
WNCC goalkeeper made three saves in net for the Cougars.
WNCC, 9-3, goes to 4-3 in conference play. The Cougars will return to action next weekend when they travel to Central Wyoming College on Friday before heading to take on Northwest College on Saturday. The Cougars final home game will be held Oct. 19 when they face Northeastern Junior College.
