The No. 18 Western Nebraska Community College volleyball captured their 19th win of the season with a conference sweep over Lamar Community College 25-10, 25-7, 25-14 Saturday afternoon at Cougar Palace.
The win was the Cougars eighth straight as they get ready to host Laramie County Community College on Tuesday.
WNCC head coach Binny Canales said his team played well as all the players saw action.
"I thought it was a good much and I thought we played well," Canales said. "We did what we wanted to do. A lot of it was because our passing was on and our serving was tough. We got them out of system and got some free balls and we got to run a little big of an offense."
Serving was a huge key for the Cougars, registering eight ace serves and just four service errors.
"We worked a lot on that. We simplified some things and just told them to serve tough," Canales said. "They were doing that and taking people out of the game. It was a good serving day for us."
The way the Cougars won also got everyone in the contest and that is something that Canales was proud of that he utilized his bench.
"That was fun and to see them smile," he said. "We had a lot of parents here today and I know it makes them feel good to see their daughter succeed."
Everyone contributed in some fashion in the win. Nine different players registered a kill in the win and 10 different players got a dig, while another 10 served at least one point.
Leslie Mamai-Lagafuaina led the attacking with nine kills followed by five each from Karen Cordero, Gabriela Canavati, and Alex Hernandez. Olivia Schaub finished with four, Anuhea Kaohi had three, and Luisa Beining with two. Andrea Tsvetanova had a near double-double with 19 set assists and eight points with five digs. Olivia Transfiguracion had 11 set assists. Anabelle Gillen finished with 10 points, three aces, and two digs, while Ana Costas had six points and five digs.
Nicole Pena finished with four digs and three points; Adia Sherbeyn had five digs, five points, and two aces; Arianna Mitchell had four digs and two kills; Kaohi had three digs; Hernandez had four points and two digs; and Cordero had two points and an ace.
WNCC, 19-5, will be back in action Tuesday when they host Laramie County Community College at 7 p.m. before hitting the road for a contest Friday in McCook. McCook upended No. 20 Northeastern Junior College on Saturday in four sets.
