Chad Gibney is entering his sixth year as the head coach at Western Nebraska Community College. He has led the Cougars to five consecutive NJCAA National Tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight appearance this past season while knocking off the #1 team in the nation -- Jones College. The Cougars are one of only six teams in the country to go to five straight national tournaments. Over his career, Gibney has posted an overall record of 120-19.

Gibney has led the team to two Region IX championships and four conferences championships. The Cougars won a remarkable 54 consecutive home games and 49 consecutive conference games from 2017-2020. Coach Gibney’s teams have finished ranked in the Top 25 every year and finished as high as No. 2 in the country in 2020.

Players have had great success at Western Nebraska and have continued to have success at the 4-year level. Gibney has coached and recruited 4 NJCAA All-Americans over the past seasons, including two First-team selections. Gibney coached Merle Wiehl (1st Team All NJCAA), who became the All-Time leading scorer in WNCC history, and TK Morehouse (1st Team All NJCAA), who became 2nd in career points and assists.

Gibney has been named Region IX Coach of the Year three times, District I Coach of the Year twice, and was named World Exposure National Coach of the Year in 2020.

The Cougars have also excelled in the classroom being an All-NJCAA Academic team four seasons. There have been several academic All-Americans. Gibney has coached All-Region players and has players sign onto 4-year universities at all levels. Several of Gibney’s players have gone onto play professionally.

The Cougars play a fun, up-tempo style predicated on defensive pressure. The Cougars have been Top 10 in the country in points the last four seasons and led the country in 3-pointers made in 2019. Gibney is known for his player development both on and off the floor. His biggest goal is making sure his player are prepared to succeed both on and off the court.
