Lady Indians drop first home match of year to Western Nebraska

The McCook Community College volleyball team dropped its first home match of the season Friday losing in straight sets to 17th ranked Western Nebraska 19-25, 12-25, 17-25.

"Tonight we couldn't compete because we were competing with ourselves, we weren't even competing with the other team," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

Western Nebraska leads the Region IX south-sub region with a 4-0 mark (21-5 overall.) MCC falls to 3-2 and 18-8 overall. With Otero Junior College's Friday sweep over Lamar, the Rattlers take over second place in the conference with a 3-1 record.

"We had plans tonight to execute with a purpose, and a plan for what we needed to do in order to win and we were unable to do that because we were battling ourselves individually and that resulted in us not playing as a team," Kobza said.

Freshman Fernanda Canedo, (Cochabamba, Boliva) had nine kills and 12 digs. Freshman Kallie Cathcart, (Holly, Colo.) had six kills and four assist blocks.

Freshman Emily Barr, (Hershey) had four kills and two assist blocks. Sophomore Bailey Honn, (McCook) had four kills.

Sophomore Kiera Barr, (Granby, Colo.) led MCC with 18 digs.

All three freshmen setters saw action Friday. Heiata Tauota, (Nantes, France) had 11 assists, Chandler Nelson, (Colorado Springs) had six and Madison Mendoza, (Ogallala) four.

The Lady Indians will take on North Platte Tuesday at home in the annual Pink-Out game for breast cancer awareness. Also up for grabs is the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference Title. MCC leads with a 5-0 mark, North Platte is 3-1 in conference and 11-17 overall. MCC won a five-set match in North Platte Oct. 2.
