EWC women falter in fourth quarter against WNCC

Three quarters of tense, gripping basketball set up Monday night's game between Eastern Wyoming and Western Nebraska women's basketball teams to be a photo finish.

In the end, the No. 3 ranked Cougars pulled away with a massive fourth quarter and the Lancers fell 80-62 at home.

EWC was outscored 31-12 in the final frame to fall to the Cougars for the second time this season.

Sophomore Paula Martinez Sanz led the Lancers with 15 points, followed by 14 points and eight rebounds from freshman Emilia Axelsson and 11 points from freshman Raleigh Basart.

The Lancers led 50-49 after three quarters, and 31-28 at the half as they competed with their rivals and one of the top teams in the nation.

Freshman Ane Esnal Aguirre tallied eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Montse Gutierrez Ibanez added eight points and three assists.

Emma Strom tied Aguirre with a team-high seven boards, including four on the offensive end.

The Lancers remain home for two more games this week. They host Casper at 5:30 on Wednesday and Western Wyoming at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
