MCC Volleyball opens Region IX road play with 3-0 win

TRINIDAD, Colo. The McCook Community College volleyball team opened up the Region IX portion of the schedule Friday with a straight-set win over Trinidad State. MCC won 25-12, 25-15, 25-21.

"This being our first bigger travel trip, I was nervous on how they would get off the bus and play," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. "The girls came in and played solid all around."

Sophomore Fernanda Canedo (Cochabamba, Boliva) and freshman Jordan Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) both had nine kills to pace the MCC attack. Canedo also had one assist block, two aces and four digs. Jerome had one solo block and an assist block.

Sophomore Mackenzie Anderson (Ogallala High School) had six kills, and one assist block. Sophomore Emily Bar (Hershey) had four kills, one solo block, one assist block, an ace, and 10 digs. Freshman Amerika Jones (Honolulu, Hawaii) had four kills one solo block and two assist blocks.

Freshman Kaylee Palmieri (Gibbon) was credited with three digs.

"Kaylee was our libero in the third set and came in strong in that position," Kobza said. "And redshirt freshman Evie Hopkinson (Spanish Fork, Utah) came in as a defensive specialist and did great too."

Heiata Tauota (Nantes, France) led MCC with eight assists, and added two kills and four assist blocks. Freshman Eisa Mondragon (Topeka, Kan.) had five digs and seven assists.

"Suzy Cordova came in cold off the bench in the third set and had three assist blocks and hit a solid ball that got dug up, but there was a lot of fire in that play," Kobza said of the freshman from Fort Collins, Colo.

The Lady Indians improve to 6-3 and head to Lamar Saturday to take on the 0-12 Lopes at 2 p.m. (CT). This game was moved up to take the place of Otero Junior College (4-4), unable to play this weekend because of COVID-19 health concerns with the Lady Rattler program.
