Cougars Softball Wins Three at Cisco Round Robin

Brownwood, TX- Coastal Bend College softball successfully competed in the Cisco College Round Robin invitational this past weekend. The Cougars won three out of four games during their weekend road  trip. 

Coastal Bend struggled to get their offense going on Friday, getting easily dispatched by Western Nebraska Community College, 11-5. The Cougars of Western Nebraska got things moving in the first inning, when they opened the game up with two runs. Not to be outdone, CBC tallied up two runs of their own to knot the game up after one complete inning of play.

In the bottom of third inning, Coastal Bend took the lead by scoring a base-runner. The CBC lead quickly evaporated as the bats of Western Nebraska started to warm up in the top of the fourth. WNCC took a 4-3 lead and never looked back. 

Coastal Bend tried chipping away at the Western Nebraska lead but could not string enough hits together. The Cougars ultimately fell 11-5 to WNCC.

Tessa Ramirez toed the rubber for Coastal Bend College. The righty lasted seven innings, allowing 12 hits and nine runs while striking out 13.Coastal Bend College hit one home run on the day. Yadira Lopez had a long ball in the first inning.

Coastal Bend College racked up ten hits on the day. Lopez, Alana Benitez, Ashley Patterson, and Alivia Mata-Alamillo all had multiple hits for Coastal Bend College. Lopez led Coastal Bend College with three hits in four at bats.


In game two of the round robin, Coastal Bend stole the lead late and defeated Garden City Community College, 4-3 on Friday. The Broncbuster scored the games first runs in the second inning. 

Coastal Bend then tied the game up in the next half inning to put the game at two runs a piece. Moving to the top of the fifth inning, Garden City again regained the lead by scoring a run. 

The game was tied at three with the Cougars batting in the bottom of the sixth when Juliana Dominguez singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

In the top of the sixth inning, CBC held the Broncbusters to a scoreless frame. The Cougars were able to score in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the lead.

Heading to the top of the seventh, the Cougar pitching and defense kept Garden City from scoring. Coastal Bend was able to close the game out with a 4-3 win.

Coastal Bend College was boosted by Dominguez who went 4-for-4 at the plate. Dominguez singled in the first, singled in the second, doubled in the fifth, and singled in the sixth. She also recorded a game high, three RBI's. 

Isabella Gutierrez led things off in the circle for Coastal Bend College. The pitcher went six and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out four.

Coastal Bend College totaled 14 hits in the game.  Dominguez, Yadira Lopez, Elia Palomo, and Alana Benitez all had multiple hits for Coastal Bend College. 


For the first game on Saturday, Coastal Bend found themselves in a battle. The Cougars went into extra innings and took lead late and defeated Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen 9-8 on Saturday. 

As the ball game would have it, both ball clubs took turns holding the lead. First Frank Philips with two runs in the bottom of the first. Then the Cougars knotting the game up, 2-2 in the top of the second. The Cougars would then add four runs; two in the fourth and two in the sixth inning to lead, 6-2.

After building a four-run lead in the sixth inning and then held off Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen's charge. Following the Cougars two runs in the top of the sixth, Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen answered with two of their own. 

Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen then answered when the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs. Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen scored three runs in the seventh inning.  The game was tied at eight with CBC batting in the top of the ninth when Alana Benitez singled on a 1-0 count, scoring the game winning run.

Haley Smith toed the rubber for Coastal Bend College. The righthander went nine innings, allowing seven runs on 13 hits, striking out nine and walking one.

Coastal Bend College tallied one home run on the day. Mata-Alamillo had a dinger in the sixth inning.Coastal Bend College collected 16 hits on the day.  

Elia Palomo, Benitez, Grace Martinez, and Mata-Alamillo each had multiple hits for Coastal Bend College.  Benitez and Palomo each managed three hits to lead Coastal Bend College.  Coastal Bend College didn't commit a single error in the field. 

Nessa Poncio entered the game in the 9th inning to help the Cougars hold onto victory. Poncio walked one batter and struck out two others for her performance. 


In the fourth and final game of the weekend, Coastal Bend aimed to end their play on a high note and did just that. The Cougars reeled off another victory, making it three straight wins.

Pitcher, Tessa Ramirez had all the right stuff for the Cougars, allowing zero runs and besting Cisco College by a score of 3-0. Ramirez led things off in the circle for Coastal Bend College. The righty surrendered zero runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out five.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Ramirez struck out five, while Wrangler pitchers sat down ten.

CBC Catcher, Harley Escamilla recorded an RBI Double for the contest. Katelynn Torres also knocked in an RBI during the victory. Yadira Lopez went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Coastal Bend College in hits.

The Cougars improve to 5-7 on the season by winning three out of four games for the weekend. Coastal Bend will be on the road, Wednesday, February 23rd for a Doubleheader versus Temple College. First pitch is at 1:00 PM at the Temple College Softball Field.
