Western Nebraska ends MCC volleyball season in sweep

STERLING, Colo. -- The McCook Community College volleyball season came to a close Friday when 19th ranked Western Nebraska dropped the Lady Indians in straight sets in the contender's round of the Region IX Tournament.

"This was not the way we wanted to finish, but I still think we had a great year," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

The Cougars downed MCC 25-16, 25-19, 25-20.

Western Nebraska started the day finishing a game suspended Thursday night, after Coach Binny Canales had a medical emergency, with his team down 2-0 and 18-10 in the third set. The Cougars resumed their match at 11 a.m. without their coach, and lost 25-18 to send them to the 1 p.m. game with MCC.

The Lady Indians never really pressed the Cougars until taking a 19-18 lead in the third set but Western Nebraska responded with a 5-0 run and closed out the match.

Freshman Fernanda Canedo, (Cochabamba, Boliva) Fernanda had 12 kills, 11 digs and one ace.

Freshman Kallie Cathcart had four kills two assist blocks and one solo block. Freshman Heiata Tauota, (Nantes, France) had 19 assists and five digs.

Sophomore co-captain Mallory Brown (Colorado Springs) had six kills and four digs. Sophomore co-captain Kiera Barr (Granby, Colo.) had 12 digs and two assists.

MCC closes out the season 25-12.

"Every year our record continues to get better and it will only go up from here," Kobza said. "I told the girls, this season-ending game is just the start to the beginning of the next."
With the win over the Lady Indians, Western Nebraska improves to (27-8) and will play the winner of the Eastern Wyoming/Western Wyoming game Saturday at 1 p.m.

Tonight's Region IX championship match pits 16th ranked Northeastern Junior College (23-9) against Otero Junior College (22-8), with the winner to move on and play in Northwest Plains District A championship. The loser will play in the contender's championship game Saturday at 5 p.m. with that winner moving on to the Northwest Plains District B championships.
