WNCC baseball team drops season openers

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team dropped both games of its season-opening doubleheader against Garden City Community College on Friday in Garden City, Kansas.

The Cougars fell 10-2 in the first game and came up on the wrong end of a 15-5 decision in game two.

WNCC totaled six hits in the opener. Scottsbluff High School graduate Ty Benson led the offense with a pair of hits and two runs batted in. Lincoln Trujilo also finished with two hits. Trujilo and Stuart Eurich plated the Cougars' runs in the contest. Eurich and Alex Achtermann both had singles. Benson and Eurich finished with a stolen base.

Angel Cortes took the loss on the mound. He allowed four runs on four hits and struck out two in four and a third innings of work.

WNCC totaled seven hits in the second game. Brandan Maher led the way offensively with two hits, including a double. Eurich, Achtermann, Brandon Bachar, Isaac Taylor, and Tyler Shubert all finished with a single. Bachar, Eurich, Achtermann, Taylor, and Maher drove in one run each. Gering High School graduate Esai Hernandez drew a pair of walks, stole a base, and scored a run.

Jaco Pekol took the loss on the mound. He didn't allow an earned run in four innings of work. Pekol allowed six hits and struck out four.

WNCC will be back in action against Garden City on Saturday beginning at noon.
