Athlete Of The Week

Female Athlete of the Week -- Yuliyana Valcheva-- Female Athlete of the Week for the Week Ending Feb. 2 -- Yuliyana Valcheva continues to quietly have a nice season. In two game last week, Valcheva tallied double figure scoring. In a game against Otero, who was 17-3 when they entered Cougar Palace, Yuliyana finished with 13 points and six rebounds with three steals. She also connected on a trey and went 4 of 6 from the free throw line. The big game that she has was in an 89-47 win over Trinidad State on Jan. 28 where the sophomore forward/shooting guard led the team along with Tishara Morehouse with 17 points. Yuliyana also had eight rebounds, connected on two treys, and went 5 of 6 from the free throw line. For the season, she is averaging 12.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and shooting 79.2 percent from the charity stripe.
Male Athlete of the Week -- Kalen Williams-- Male Athlete of the Week for Week Ending Feb. 2 -- Kalen Williams, a freshman guard, is starting to come up clutch in games during the final month of the season. In a come-from-behind win against Trinidad State, 90-89, Kalen tallied 16 points with two treys. Kalen hit the go-ahead jumper with seconds remaining to give the Cougars the win. A few days later, Jan. 31, Kalen helped the Cougars top No. 7 Otero 99-80. Kalen finished with 14 points in the game, which was one of five Cougars to finish in double figures. On Feb. 4, Kalen also hit clutch free throws while scoring 23 points in a win over North Platte 76-72.
