WNCC baseball drops contest to South Mountain in high-scoring game

Action against Miles CC in February.

PHOENIX, Ariz., -- The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team got behind early and never could catch up as South Mountain Community College scored in all six innings in posting a 19-7 win over WNCC Wednesday at Arizona.

WNCC has dropped seven straight on the current road trip. WNCC will look to get back on the winning track when they face Mesa Community College in Arizona on Thursday.

WNCC fell behind early 11-0 after four innings after South Mountains plated three in the first, six in the second, and single runs in the third and fourth.

WNCC mounted a comeback in the fifth when they scored three times to make it 11-3. WNCC started the fifth when Tyler Easter and Ashton Ross had back-to-back singles. Easter then scored on a Garrett Dodd double. With two outs, Calvin Johnson singled in two runs with a single, but that was all.

South Mountain answered right back with four runs each in the fifth and sixth to take a 19-3 lead. WNCC did try to come back in the seventh when they scored four runs. WNCC loaded the bases with one out on free passes. Caleb Caciari then singled in one run while Bryce Peterson and Easter was walked and hit by a pitch to force in runs. Ross then scored to make it 19-7 on a ground out. But that was all the Cougars could manage.

WNCC managed just six hits in the contest while South Mountain had seven. Six different Cougars had at least one hit. Dodd had the only extra base hit with a double.

Gus Allred took the loss, going two innings in allowing nine runs, six hits, and striking out one. Myttchel Pollock went 3.1 innings in allowing seven earned runs with four strikeouts followed by an inning by Tucker Deal.
