WNCC softball drop two one-run games on Saturday

                SNYDER, Texas – The Western Nebraska Community College softball team came up short in dropping two one-run contests Saturday against Western Texas College.

                The Cougars opened the day with an extra-inning affair against Western Texas before falling 6-5 in nine innings. WNCC then dropped another tight contest 3-2 to the Westerners.

                WNCC scored first as Medina scored on a groundout by Christian Bobian. Western Texas tied it in the first with a single run.

                The Cougars plated two runs in the third as Courtney Medina tripled and scored on a Jazmine Wessel 2-run home run for the 3-1 lead.

                Western Texas tied the game with a single run in the third and seventh innings. Western Texas won the game in the extra innings as each team placed a runner at second base. Both teams scored one in the eighth. WNCC added one in the ninth, but Western Texas added two runs for the win.

                WNCC managed six hits in the opener. Celyn Whitt was the only Cougar with multiple hits with two singles. Wessel finished the game with two RBIs and a home run, while Medina had a triple and three runs scored.

                Whitney Fields started the game and went 6 2/3 innings in allowing three runs and nine hits. Fields struck out three. Andy Hancock finished the game, tossing two innings in allowing a run with three hits.

                The second game was a pitcher's showdown as neither team scored until the fifth inning when the Cougars plated two runs.

                Fields led off the fifth with a walk and scored on A Christian Bobian triple. Brittany Bigge than scored Bobian after reaching base on an error. WNCC loaded the bases after Median and Whitt singled, but they couldn't get another run in.

                Western Texas took the lead in the sixth with three runs on just one hit.

                WNCC managed just five hits in the second game. Bobian was the only Cougar to notch multiple hits with a triple, a run scored, and a RBI.

                Hancock took the hard-luck loss, going six innings in striking out three, allowing eight hits and allowing three runs.

                WNCC, 4-2, will be back in action Feb. 27 and 28 when they travel to face Otero Junior College to open conference play.
