Fields tosses 1-hitter, WNCC softball sweeps Lamar

LAMAR, Colo. – Whitney Fields tossed a one hitter and the Western Nebraska Community College softball team registered a Region IX conference doubleheader sweep of Lamar Community College Saturday afternoon in Lamar, Colorado.

In the opener, Andy Hancock tossed a four-hitter and the Cougar women ran to a 14-1 win. The second game saw Fields allowing just one hit through five innings while striking out five as the Cougars registered the 11-0 shutout.

WNCC, 10-4 overall, moved to 6-2 overall in conference. The Cougars will travel to face conference-leading Trinidad State Junior College Sunday at 11 a.m. Trinidad State won two tight games against McCook on Saturday, winning 2-1 and 5-2. The Trojans are 6-0 in conference play and 16-5 overall.

The opening game saw the Cougars tally 12 hits, including nine extra base hits. Payten Davies had the big hitting day, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run. The freshman from West Jordan, UTah, also had three RBIs and three runs scored.

Davies was only one of several players to have big hitting games. Celyn Whitt also recorded three hits, including two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Haille Weber finished with two hits, including a double, three RBIs, and two runs scores. Weber also had two stolen bases along with Christian Bobian.

Courtney Medina tallied one hit, a triple, along with two RBIs. Also collecting doubles in the win were Jasmine Wessel and Whitney Fields.

Lamar went in front of Cougars 1-0 in the second, but the Cougars bats came alive in the third with six runs on five hits. After Bobian walked, Weber and Wessel had back-to-back doubles. Sawyer then ripped a two-run home run to leftfield. Two batters later, Davies ripped a solo shot over the centerfield fence. Fields closed out the scoring with a run-scoring double for the 6-1 lead.

WNCC added eight more runs in the fifth to put the game away on six hits on four doubles and a Medina's 2-run triple.

Hancock picked up the win, striking out four. Hancock only faced 19 batters in five innings of work.

The second game was even a stronger pitching performance with Field in the circle. Fields faced just 16 batters in five innings of work. The only Lamar baserunner came in the fifth on a 2-out single. Other than that, Fields struck out five and tossed just 66 pitches.

Offensively, the Cougar offense was just as deadly registering 13 hits with four doubles and triple. Weber had the hot bat, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, a run scored, and an RBI. Lauren Oxford also tallied three hits with two doubles and a run scored and RBI.

Whitt and Medina each had two singles. Whitt scored two runs, while Medina scored three runs and had two stolen bases.

WNCC controlled the game from the get-go, scoring a single run in the first and opening up the game with a six-spot in the second. The six runs were scored on seven hits, including doubles from Oxford, Wessel, and Weber for the 7-0 lead.
