NORTH PLATTE – The Western Nebraska Community College softball team pounded 10 home runs and Whitney Fields tossed another 1-hitter in taking a doubleheader from North Platte Community College Wednesday afternoon in North Platte.
Jasmine Wessel blasted two home runs and two doubles for six RBIs in helping the Cougars roll to the 20-4 win in he opener. Kenzie Sawyer and Whitney Fields also tallied two home runs each in the opener.
The second game saw Fields toss her third consecutive one-hitter while the offense blasted another four home runs to grab the 8-0 win.
In the opener, the Cougars pounded out 17 base hits with 13 going for extra base hits. WNCC hammered six homers and seven doubles in the win.
Wessel not only had two home runs and six RBIs, but she also scored three runs to pace the team. Fields finished the opening game with three hits, including her two home runs and a double. She had four RBIs and two runs scored.
Sawyer finished the game with two hits, both home runs along with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Also collecting two hits each were Courtney Medina and Celyn Whitt. Whitt had two doubles, three RBIs, and two runs scored, while Medina had a double with two runs scored.
WNCC never looked back in the opening game, scoring three times in the opening inning behind a 2-run Sawyer home run.
After the Cougars added a single run in the second, WNCC plated eight runs on five hits. The frame all started with back-to-back solo home runs from Wessel and Sawyer. Fields then blasted a 2-out, 2-run dinger. Medina followed with a double and Wessel finished off the scoring with a 2-run double for the 12-0 lead.
After North Platte plated a single run in the third, the Cougars added six more runs on three hits, including a run-scoring double from Whitt and a 3-run home run by Wessel. WNCC finished off the scoring with two in the fifth on Fields' second home run of the game, a 2-run shot over the centerfield fence.
Andy Hancock picked up the win in the circle, going three innings in allowing three hits, a run and striking out three. Payten Davies finished the game, tossing two innings with three hits and three runs.
The second game was a solid contest on both sides of the field. Fields went five innings allowing just one hit while striking out nine.
Offensively, WNCC had 11 hits including two doubles and four home runs.
Four Cougars finished with two hits each. Sawyer finished with a double, home run, RBI and a run scored, while Davies had a double, home run, a RBI, and two runs scored. Whitt and Haille Weber each had two hits. Weber had a home run with two runs scored and an RBI, while Whitt had two singles.
WNCC also ran the bases, swiping six bases. Medina had three stolen bases.
WNCC scored in all five innings. The first inning saw Medina score on a Christian Bobian sacrifice fly. After that, it was the offense that heated up. Davies led off the second with a double and scored on a Medina single for a 2-0 lead.
WNCC added three more in the third on a Wessel 2-run home run. WNCC scored two runs in the fourth on home runs. Weber blasted the first pitch for her first home run on the day. Sawyer blasted her third dinger of the day with a solo shot to make it 7-0.
Davies closed out the scoring by leading off the fifth with a solo blast.
WNCC, 14-4, will be back in action this weekend with eight games in four days at home. WNCC will host Western Texas College on Friday and Saturday at Volunteer Field beginning at 1 p.m. both days. WNCC will then host Dawson on Sunday and Luna Community College on Monday.
