WNCC softball host Western Texas in first home games of season Friday, Saturday

After playing 18 games on the road, the Western Nebraska Community College softball team will be seeing some action at Volunteer Field in Scottsbluff the next four days.

The Cougars, 14-4 and fresh off a 10-home run performance against North Platte Community College on Wednesday, will entertain Western Texas College in a four-game series Friday and Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. both days.

WNCC will then host Dawson Community College at 12 noon on Sunday before taking on Luna Community College on Monday at 10 a.m.

WNCC and Western Texas already faced each other back in February with each team winning twice. The Cougars won the first two games 3-1 and 12-0 before the Westerners captured one-run wins the next day 6-5 and 3-2.

The Cougars, however, have found their mark on the offensive and defensive side during their nine-game win streak. On Wednesday against North Platte Community College, the Cougars ripped 10 home runs, including three each from Jasmine Wessel and Kenzie Sawyer. WNCC ranks 35th in the nation in home runs hit with 18.

Sawyer leads the team in home runs with six followed by Wessel with five. Sawyer also so had 10 doubles with 21 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

The Cougars are among the top 15 in several other offensive categories. The Cougars are 13th in batting average at .401 and seventh in slugging percentage at .665.

Courtney Medina leads the team with a .464 batting average followed by Haille Weber at .460 and then Wessel at .444. Medina, who is the lead-off hitter, already has 17 stolen bases on the year to pace the team.

But what makes the Cougars slugging percentage impressive is not only their home run power, but the Cougars are ninth in the nation in doubles with 61 and ninth in triples with 12.

While the offense has been clicking lately, the defense has also stepped up with the strong pitching of Andy Hancock and Whitney Fields. Fields has tossed three-straight one hitters. Fields is 6-2 on the season with an ERA of 2.14 with 36 strikeouts. Hancock sports an 8-2 record with an ERA of 1.40 along with 42 strikeouts.

Western Texas enters the contest with a 9-13 record after splitting games with Ranger College and Colby Community College. Western Texas is batting .305 on the year.
