WNCC wins 15th straight with sweep over McCook
                 MCCOOK -- The Western Nebraska Community College softball team won their 15th straight game and 41st on the season with a Region IX conference sweep of McCook Community College Wednesday afternoon in McCook.

                The first game was a defensive battle until WNCC scored five, seventh inning home runs including a 3-run home run by Kenzie Sawyer for the 6-1 win. The second game saw the Cougars battle back from a 5-4 deficit to earn a 10-5 win.

                The wins moves the Cougars to 41-7 on the year. More importantly, it keeps the Cougars on top of the conference standings at 21-3, just ahead of Trinidad State Junior College at 16-4. WNCC and Trinidad State will do battle Thursday and Friday at volunteer Field in key Region IX contests. Thursday's games begin at 3 p.m. while Friday's doubleheader starts at 11 a.m.

                The first game was a tight contest as both teams were tied at 1-1 entering the final inning. That was when the Cougars opened up the game, scoring five times on six hits. The seventh started as Christian Bobian and Haille Weber each singled with one out. Sawyer followed by taking the first pitch deep over the centerfield fence for a 4-1 lead.

                WNCC wasn't finished. Jasmine Wessel and Lauren Oxford double to put two more on. Jade Morton came through with a single to score both runners for the final margin.

                Hancock closed out the game sitting down the McCook batters in order with a line out before striking out the final two batters.

                WNCC finished with 11 hits in the game. Christian Bobian led the way with a double and two singles along with a run scored. Sawyer, Wessel, and Oxford each finished with two hits. Sawyer had a home run with four RBIs, while Oxford had a double.

                Andy Hancock picked up the complete-game win from the circle. Hancock struck out eight while scattering three hits and allowing a run.

                WNCC started the second game with three, first inning runs. After that, the Cougars allowed McCook to score two fourth-inning runs and then take a 5-4 lead with three fifth-inning runs. The Cougar deficit was short-lived as WNCC came back with six runs in the sixth on five singles. Celyn Whitt and Payten Davies started the inning with singles. Courtney Medina, Weber, and Wessel each had run scoring singles in the frame.

                WNCC pounded out 14 hits in the contest. Weber led the way with 4-of-5 hitting with a double, triple, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Wessel, Bobian, and Courtney Medina each had two hits in the win. Medina had two singles with a RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases, while Bobian had two singles and two runs scored. Wessel had two RBIs.

                Whitney Fields picked up the complete game win, scattering seven hits while allowing five runs. Fields struck out five and walked two.
