WNCC softball falls to Trinidad in game one, second game suspended

The Western Nebraska Community College softball team had its 17-game winning streak snapped by Trinidad State Junior College on Friday afternoon at Volunteer Field in Scottsbluff.

The Trojans scored five runs in the sixth inning to rally for a 6-3 win in the first game of a doubleheader. The second game was halted by rain in the sixth with the teams tied at 8-8. The game was suspended and will only be completed if it's needed to decide seedings for the Region IX Tournament.

Despite the loss, WNCC still leads the regional standings with a 23-4 conference record. The Cougars, who have already clinched the No. 1 seed for the tournament, are 43-8 overall.
Trinidad State improved to 18-7 in the conference and 33-13 overall.

WNCC grabbed an early lead in Friday's first game when Celyn Whitt doubled home Lauren Oxford in the second inning.

Trinidad came back to knot the score in the fourth, but it didn't last long as WNCC plated single runs in the fourth and fifth. Whitt homered in the fourth to put the Cougars back in front. In the fifth, Courtney Medina scored on a Haille Weber groundout to make it 3-1.

Trinidad then used a big sixth inning to take over. Olivia Muniz tied things up with a two-run home run. The Trojans added three more runs in the frame on three hits to surge into a 6-3 lead.

WNCC managed just six hits in the contest compared to 10 for Trinidad. Whitt paced the Cougars with two hits, including a double to go with her home run. Whitt also had two RBIs.

Andy Hancock took the loss in the circle. She allowed just two earned runs on 10 hits and struck out four in seven innings.

Trinidad carried the momentum from the win into the second game by moving out to a 7-1 lead through two innings. The Cougars rallied with two runs in the third and five more in the fourth to grab an 8-7 lead. The game was then delayed when the rain began.

After about a 20-minute break, play resumed and Trinidad tied things up at 8-8. With WNCC getting ready to bat in the bottom of the sixth, the game was suspended after the field became unplayable.

At the time of the stoppage, WNCC totaled 10 hits. Hancock had a pair of doubles. Weber and Oxford each had one. Medina had a triple.

WNCC will next be in action Thursday against Iowa Western Community College in North Platte.
