WNCC women top Colby 80-40

COLBY, Kan. – The Western Nebraska Community College women's basketball team had three players in double figures and played strong defense in rolling to an 80-40 win over Colby Community College in the second day of the Colby Classic.

                The 25th-ranked Cougars led 18-8 after one quarter and pushed the lead to 40-24 at halftime.

                The second half saw the Cougars' defense become even more intense, holding Colby to just 21 percent shooting. WNCC outscored Colby 40-16.

                WNCC shot 52 percent for the game and swathe team connect on three 3-pointers. WNCC also pulled down 45 rebounds, led by six from Bree Paulson

                WNCC saw Oleida DeLeon lead the team with 13 points, including 4 of 6 shooting from the free throw line. DeLeon also had four steals.

                WNCC also got double-digit scoring from Luize Skrastina with 11 points and five rebounds, while Sladjana Rakovic had 10 points.

                Paulson and Mikayla Gonzales each chipped in eight points, while Ozge Yarga had nine points.

                The Cougars defense was intense, getting 17 steals. After DeLeon's four, Zeynap Canbaz had three and Skrastina and Hannah Sparks each had two.

                WNCC, 2-0, will be back in action Saturday afternoon as they face Tabor College junior varsity.
