WNCC hits century mark in win over Central Wyoming

The Western Nebraska Community College women's basketball team scored a season-high 101 points in a 101-42 victory over Central Wyoming College during the final game of the WNCC Classic on Saturday afternoon at Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff.

Four different Cougars scored in double figures as WNCC shot a sizzling 57.7 percent from the field overall.

The Cougars, who never trailed in the contest, piled up 31 points in the first quarter and never looked back.

"I felt like today we came out strong with a lot of intensity," WNCC freshman guard Olivia Wiberg said. "We shot the ball very well and that set the tone of the game."

WNCC tacked on 28 points in the second quarter to build a 59-26 advantage at halftime. The Cougars followed that up with a 25-point third quarter, which brought up the topic of hitting the 100-point mark.

"Later in the game we made it a goal to make it to 100," Wiberg said. "We wanted to keep moving and pushing forward."

The Cougars accomplished that goal with a 17-point fourth quarter.

Sophomore Sladjana Rakovic led all scorers in the game with 19 points. She finished 7 of 10 from the field overall and sank all three of her 3-pointers.

Melisa Kadic followed right behind with 17 points. Kadic ended 7 of 11 from the floor overall and finished 3-for-4 from behind the 3-point line.

Also cracking the double-figure scoring column for the Cougars were Bree Paulson with 15 points and Anastacia Johnson with 12.

WNCC converted 9 of its 15 3-pointers and shot 10 of 17 at the free throw line.

The Cougars enjoyed a 38-25 advantage on the glass in the game. Johnson led the way with a team-high six rebounds. Jaleesa Avery, Kellie Gaston, Zeynep Canbaz, and Deniz Dalkiran all track down four boards each.

Rakovic, Gaston, and Paulson dished out four assists each.

WNCC totaled 18 steals in the contest. Johnson led the way defensively with five steals. Rakovic, Wiberg, and Paulson addedd three steals each.

The Cougars held Central Wyoming to 35.4 percent shooting overall.

WNCC improved to 6-2 on the season with the win. The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday at Casper College.
