Wiehl leads WNCC women past Gillette

              GILLETTE, Wyo. - Merle Wiehl scored 25 points to lead the Western Nebraska Community College women's basketball team to a 91-68 win over Gillette College on Friday night in Gillette, Wyoming.

              The victory improved the Cougars to 4-2 on the season.

              WNCC led 21-14 after the opening quarter and held a 45-29 advantage at halftime. The Cougars' lead grew to as many as 25 in the fourth quarter.

              Wiehl was joined in the double-figure scoring column by Taylor Joplin with 21 points and Tishara Morehouse with 12. Allysah Boothe and R'mania Pulling followed with nine each. Wiehl and Boothe both canned a trio of 3-pointers.

              WNCC finished the game shooting 51 percent from the field overall. The Cougars converted six of their seven free throws.

              Pulling dished out a team-high six assists. Wiehl and Morehouse added four helpers each.

              Yuliyana Valcheva grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Cougars on the glass. Eva Langton pulled down six boards.

              Boothe and Morehouse led WNCC defensively with three steals each.

              The Cougars will face Colorado Northwestern on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Gillette.
