WNCC women top Mount Marty College

GILLETTE, Wyo. – The Western Nebraska Community College women's soccer team received a goal by Destiny Mueller in the final 10 minutes to register a 2-1 win over Mount Marty College Saturday at Gillette, Wyoming.

The win keeps the Cougar women unbeaten on the season after topping two national powers last weekend in Iowa Western Community College and Barton Community College.

Mount Marty, who is a four-year program out of Montana, battled the Cougars tooth and nail for 90 minutes.

Mount Marty struck first scoring a goal just 14 minutes into the contest.

WNCC answered nine minutes later as Lisa Haferkamp scored the tying goal off assists from Bethany Fuchs and Caroline Vieira. Neither team scored the rest of the half to enter intermission knotted at 1-1.

The second half was a battle as WNCC continued to dominate the run of play but had trouble finding the back of the net. Finally, with 20 minutes to play, Gering graduate Mueller netted her first collegiate goal to put the Cougars in front 2-1. Mueller's goal came off a corner kick and bounced around in the box and the freshman booted it into the net. The Cougars went on to hold Mount Marty scoreless for the win.

The Cougars finished with 19 shots compared to three for Mount Marty. WNCC held the corner kick advantage 10 to zero.

WNCC goalkeepers Ana Von Ruden and Mel Kaup each recorded one save in net.

WNCC will look to stay unbeaten when they face Dakota County Tech College Sunday in Gillette.
