Otero upends No. 1 WNCC

                The Otero Junior College volleyball team upset the No. 1 Western Nebraska Community College Thursday evening in La Junta, Colorado.

                The Rattlers earned the four-set win 25-22, 16-25, 25-22, 25-16 in a Region IX South match-up, snapping the Cougars 13-game win streak.

                The contest was the first of three straight Region IX South matches in southern Colorado. The Cougars will look to rebound when they travel to Lamar Community College on Friday before facing Trinidad State Junior College Saturday afternoon.

                WNCC had plenty of offense as three players finished with double-figure kills and four players had double-digit digs.

                Three Cougars finished with double-doubles. Barb Briceno finished with 13 digs and 15 kills. Briceno also had seven points and two aces.

                Brooke Kaawa tallied 14 kills and 14 digs. Kaawa also had two solo blocks. Bia Berta finished with 14 digs, 49 set assists, five kills, three points, a solo block, and an ace serve.

                Also for the Cougars, Lara Picht had 18 kills and seven digs; Genesis Benitez-Fontanez had 17 digs, two points and three set assists; Kirstee Trees had three digs; Larissa Perez had three kills; Lauren Shaul had two digs and two points; and Kaylee Spreier had seven points, three digs, five kills, three solo blocks, and two set assists.
