No. 2 WNCC tops NJC in four

                STERLING, Colo. – The No. 2 Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team needed four games to knock off Northeastern Junior College but they got the job done in a loud Bank of Colorado gym by topping the Plainswomen 25-27, 25-23, 25-21, 25-17 Wednesday evening in Sterling, Colorado.

                The win was the Cougars 24th win of the season, but more importantly it moves the Cougars to 4-1 in South Sub-region play. The Plainswomen fall to 3-2 in South play.

                The Cougars pounded down 60 kills in the win as three players recorded double-figure kills. Kaylee Spreier finished with 10 kills. The Gering graduate also had a double-double as she finished with 10 points along with two digs.

                Barbara Briceno led the offense with 19 kills. Briceno also had seven digs, two set assists, six points, and two aces. Lara Picht also tallied 16 kills.

                Picht also had a double-double with 17 digs, eight points, and two aces.

                Alwaise Villa and Bia Berta had a good match. Both had double-doubles. Villa finished with 10 digs and 10 points, while Berta had 10 digs, 44 assists, two kills, seven points, and an ace.

                Also for the Cougars, Brooke Kaawa had seven kills, 19 digs, two solo blocks, three set assists, three points, and two ace serves. Kadara Marshall finished with six kills and two digs, while Danika Daum had two digs.

                WNCC will have little time to rest as they will be back in action Thursday when they host McCook Community College in a Region IX South contest. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
