WNCC volleyball team goes 4-1 in WyoBraska Invite

                After falling to Salt Lake Community College on Thursday, the Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team swept through their four opponents on Friday and Saturday to finish the WyoBraska Invite with a 4-1 record.

                The WNCC women finished the tourney with two impressive wins on Saturday, topping Colorado Northwestern 25-13, 25-14, 25-15 before capping off the weekend with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-15 sweep of Laramie County Community College.

                In the win over Colorado Northwestern, the Leslie Mamai-Lagafuaina led the team with 14 kills, two solo blocks, and seven points. Karen Cordero finished the contest with 13 kills, while Anu Kaohi and La'Treva Kennedy each had five kills. Luisa Beining added four kills while Olivia Schaub had two.

                Also for the Cougars, Ana Costas had a double-double of 13 digs, 17 points, and two aces; while Anabelle Gillen had five digs and two points. Gabriela Canavati tallied nine points with two digs, while Alex Hernandez had three points, Adia Sherbeyn had 11 digs, Andrea Tsvetanova had 10 set assists, and Olivia Transfiguracion had 22 set assists.

                WNCC finished off the tournament with an impressive sweep over LCCC. The last time the Cougars and Golden Eagles played, WNCC needed five sets to top LCCC, winning the fifth set 15-11 on Sept. 3 in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

                Saturday night, Cordero finished with 13 kills, five digs, and five points. Canavati tallied eight kills with two points and a solo block, while Mamai Lagafuaina had seven kills, seven points, and four solo blocks.

                Kennedy and Beining each had six kills. Kennedy also had two solo blocks.

                Also for the Cougars, Costas had 11 digs and seven points, while Transfiguracion had 34 set assists and five points. Gillen finished with five points, while Sherbeyn had six points and four digs.

                Other scores in the invite at WNCC saw NJC over Sheridan 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 25-20; Dawson over Casper 25-27, 25-17, 18-25, 25-22, 15-6; NJC over Casper 25-18, 25-21, 25-23; and Salt Lake over LCCC 25-14, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17.

                At Torrington, Wyoming, the other side of the invite saw some great volleyball led by a talented EWC squad, who went 2-0 on the day. The big game was the Lancers topping No. 12 Utah State-Eastern in four sets 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 25-18.  The Lancers then capped off the tourney with a 25-13, 25-14, 25-12 win over Trinidad State Junior College.

                Other scores at Torrington saw Dawson top Sheridan 23-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-12, 15-8; Trinidad State topped Midland in four sets 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-21; Western Wyoming over Utah State Eastern 25-16, 25-12, 25-18; and Western Wyoming swept Midland.
