Men's Soccer Opens Season in Dominating Fashion going 2-0 on the Weekend

The Reivers got off to a flying start in the first game for Mike Brown as head coach of the Iowa Western men's soccer team. Iowa Western defeated Western Nebraska 6-0 at home on Friday in the regular season opener. Brown was pleased with the result, but he also noted that the offense still has room to improve. We had some really good moments off set pieces," Brown said. "I think offensively we're still developing as a team. We had a lot more opportunities that we should have put away. We're still trying to find our identity offensively, but it's coming." Fernando Zaragoza netted a pair of goals and Nicolas Torres added two assists as the Reivers rolled to a 6-0 victory. Joel Quashie, Damia Viader, Theo Le Calve, and Sohya Yamamoto each added goals of their own in the match. After grabbing a 3-0 halftime lead, the Reivers never looked back.

The Reiver men's soccer team capped off an excellent weekend to start the season with a 6-0 win over #12 Illinois Central College this past Sunday at home. On head coach Mike Brown's birthday, the Reivers put together a comprehensive performance, controlling the possession for much of the match and holding the Cougars to only three shots. Led by a strong defense, the Reivers entered the half leading 1-0 on a goal from Mario Magana off of an intelligent play by the forward to intercept an errant back pass and dribble past the keeper. The Reivers then went on to score 5 more goals in the final 30 minutes of the match off of an own goal from Illinois Central and goals from Nicolas Torres, Eduardo Barrios, Theo Le Calve, and Fernando Zaragoza. Nicolas Torres added his third assist of the season. Iowa Western looks ahead to another Friday/Sunday matchup this weekend as John Wood Community College and Central Community College come to town for another weekend of soccer at the Reiver Soccer Complex. Coach Brown had this to say on the weekend, "I'm very proud of the boys and their performance this weekend. We executed our process, but we still have more room for growth. I am loving the commitment and dedication of this group!"
