Northwest nips WNCC men in a high scoring soccer match

The Western Nebraska Community College and Northwest College men's soccer teams had plenty offense on the day.

In the end, it was Northwest's Charlie Gleisinger who became the hero, netting a shot with two seconds left to help the Trappers upend WNCC 6-5 in Region IX action Saturday afternoon at the Landers Soccer Complex.

Gleisinger had three goals on the day for Northwest while WNCC saw Matheus Campos and Luan Abary each score twice.

The high scoring match actually was anyone's to win. The Cougars showed plenty of fight to come back after Northwest went up 4-1 in the first 30 minutes of the match.

WNCC's only goal during that time came from Campos with an assist from Sergio Moreno.

Abary helped the Cougars close the gap to 4-3 at halftime with two goals in the final five minutes of the half. Abary's goals were assisted by Campos and Owen Parra.

WNCC knotted the score in the second half as Campos feed Moreno with a pass that he unloaded to the back of the net.

Northwest retook the lead in the 80th minutes as Gleisinger took a pass from George Battersby to go back on top 5-4. The Cougars kept fighting and finally tied it again in the 85th minute as Gage Smith took a ball off a rebound and sent a shot from about 35 feet out that went high and over the goalkeeper's head in the top corner to the tie the game.

The match then seemed as if was going into overtime, just like the women's match did. But, no as Gleisinger scored the winning, controversial goal with two seconds left. There was a scramble for the ball inside the box by the goal post.

WNCC goalkeepter Bryant Valesquez seemed to have the ball wrapped up but Gleisinger some how got the ball into the net. After the center referee and side judge talked it over, the center referee signaled goal. Two seconds later, the final whistle blew.

WNCC had 12 shots in the match with five corner kicks. Northwest finished with 22 shots and 10 corner kicks.

The WNCC men will return to action next week when they travel to Laramie County Community College on Wednesday before facing Western Wyoming Community College on Friday.
