WNCC men down Central Wyoming 3-1

Saugal Rai scored two goals and the Western Nebraska Community College men's soccer team picked up their second win of the season with a 3-1 win over Central Wyoming College in conference action Friday at Landers Soccer Complex.

Rai scored the first and last goals for the Cougars and the freshman from Aurora, Colorado, said they played OK on the day.

"We did good. We could have done better, but at the end we won. We just keep going from here," Rai said. "It was very important for us to get the win because it was a home game and I am just glad that we got a win."

Friday's win snaps a four-game losing skid for the Cougar men. Rai said they needed this win.

"We needed this win," Rai said. "Hopefully next game we win, too. We did good today and we are working hard to get better."

The Cougars did play well in the contest. Rai scored the first goal of the match just a little over two minutes gone in the match when he took a pass from Luis Martinez and put it into the back of the net.

WNCC had many other opportunities to score in the first half, but couldn't get the ball into the back of the net and had to settle for the 1-0 halftime lead.

The Cougars went up 2-0 with five minutes gone in the second half when Washington Junior scored to make it 2-1.

Central Wyoming sliced the lead in half when Conner Johnson scored with 16:54 to play. That was the Rustlers only goal as the Cougar defense stepped up to shut down their offense.

WNCC added an insurance goal with 6:41 to play as Rai got his second goal off an assist from Esteban Tavira.

WNCC finished the match with 16 shots while Central Wyoming had 10.

The Rustlers had four corner kicks compared to just two for WNCC.

The Cougar men will next be in action on Wednesday when they have their last regular season road trip when they head to Casper College. The men will then return home next weekend when they host Northwest College on Friday and Trinidad State Junior College on Sunday.
