GREAT BEND, Kan. – The Western Nebraska Community College women's and men's soccer teams endured different results on Sunday against Barton Community College in Great Bend, Kansas.

                The Cougar women got a late second-half goal by Juliana Stratford, of Sandy, Utah, to record a 1-1 tie with Barton in double overtime.

                The Cougar men weren't as fortunate, suffering a 2-0 loss to Barton.

                Both teams, however, had a successful weekend, where on Saturday both teams defeated Pratt. The women won 3-1 while the guys captured a 3-2 win on Saturday.

                Sunday's women's contest was a dandy. Barton held a 1-0 lead at intermission on a goal off a free kick. Barton's Analia Torres sent the free kick into Megan Martinez, who was in the box and scored with 12:28 to play.

Barton seemed as if they were going to go on to victory in the second half.

The WNCC women had other ideas. With just over 2 minutes play, the WNCC defense got the ball just on the other side of midfield. Eden Washington took the pass from a defender and went up the sideline before crossing the ball to the middle of the box. That is where Stratford took a shot and scored in the upper half of the net for the Equalizer.

WNCC coach Todd Rasnic said the two 10-minute overtime periods had a few chances by both teams to score, but the contest ended in a tie.

The tie moves the women's record to 1-1-2 on the season.

The Cougar men played a tough match against a talented Barton squad. Barton scored first with 6:59 remaining in the first half on a goal by Pierre Cherubin.

Rasnic said Barton controlled the pace of play in the first 45 minutes in settling for the 1-0 halftime lead. The second half was a different story with WNCC dominating play. The Cougars had a shot to tie the match as JP Santos sent a strike to the upper corner, but Barton's goalkeeper made a saving save.

Barton added an insurance goal with 9:17 left in the match as Lucas Alves converted a penalty kick for the 2-0 lead.

WNCC moves to 1-1 on the season with the loss.

Both Cougar teams will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Northeastern Junior College on Friday. The Cougar men will then face Central Community College-Columbus on Saturday in Columbus.

After that, the WNCC women and men return home for contests against Sheridan College and Northwest College September 16-17.
