  • Scottsbluff’s Russel inks with WNCC women’s soccer

    Scottsbluff’s Mariah Russel didn’t have a hard decision in picking where she wanted to play soccer at the college level. After attending Western Nebraska Community College soccer camps since she was little, she had a dream of playing college soccer and now she gets to play for the Cougars for the next two years after attending their camps and working with the coaches. Russel signed to be a Cougar earlier this month and is grateful for the opportunity and said it was an easy decision since she had her mind set on WNCC.
  • Vasquez, Barrera earn post-season soccer honors

    Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer players Lesley Vasquez and Lisbeth Barrera earned post-season soccer honors for their play on the pitch this season. Vasquez, a sophomore, earned Region IX All-Region First Team honors as a midfielder, while Barrera, a freshman, garnered All-Region honorable mention honors as a defender.
  • WNCC women’s soccer battles LCCC before falling 2-1

    The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team put up a fight with Laramie County Community College on Saturday before falling in the Region IX conference contest 2-1. The Cougars, who drop to 4-6-3 overall and 3-5-2 in conference play, will enter the post-season as the sixth seed and got into the Region IX playoffs because of a Lamar Community College win over Northeastern Junior College on Saturday. WNCC will travel to Cheyenne, Wyoming, on Friday to face Laramie County Community College in the first round with the winner advancing to the semifinals the following week.
  • WNCC women play tough, fall to Otero

    The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team knew Saturday’s contest was going to be a battle and the Cougars battled with Otero College for much of the match. In the end, the Cougars fell 7-3 in a high-scoring contest. Lesley Vasquez, who had a goal and two assists in the contest, said the team played hard against a team that is second in the conference with a 7-1-1 conference mark and 9-1-1 overall. “We had a couple struggles to mark with them,” Vasquez said. “They just marked the long balls in the first half. The second half we tightened up a little and we also got some goals.”
  • WNCC women’s soccer nets seven goals in win

    Lesley Vasquez had a hat trick and Tania Razo scored twice as the Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team had a must conference win to keep their playoff hopes alive with a 7-2 win over Trinidad State College Friday afternoon at the Landers Soccer Complex. “This was a very important win for us because this win could possibly give us a shot for the playoffs,” sophomore Aileen Perez said. “But, the win was good most importantly for us as a team and our mentalities.” Perez said the keys to the game was finishing and taking shots.

    LAMAR, Colo. – In one of the more even matches of the season, the Western Nebraska Community College and Lamar Community College women’s soccer teams couldn’t settle things on the soccer field as the two teams tied 2-2 Saturday in a Region IX conference contest in Lamar, Colorado. Saturday’s contest was one where the Cougars dominated on the offensive end, but could only bury two goals.

    STERLING, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to register a 3-2 win over Northeastern Junior College in Region IX Conference play Friday afternoon in Sterling, Colorado. The Cougars received two goals from Lesley Vasquez to spearhead the comeback.

    Lesley Vasquez scored twice to help the Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team shutout Gillette College in a Region IX conference match on Saturday. Saturday’s 2-0 win came a day after the Cougars played tough against Casper College on Friday before falling 2-0.
  • WNCC women’s soccer falls to Western Wyoming

    The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team gave everything they had against the NJCAA 15th-ranked Western Wyoming Community College on Saturday, but in the end, the Cougars fell 4-0 to the Mustangs. WNCC and Western Wyoming battled to the bitter end in the first half with both teams thwarting each other’s shots. The Mustangs, however, got the only score of the first half when Ashtyn Carlson scored in the 23rd minute off an assist from Brynleigh Ritchie. After that, the Cougars had three good scoring opportunities but couldn’t find the back of the net. Cougar defensive player Emilee Hunsley said they played well but came up short.
  • WNCC women’s soccer ties Central Wyoming

    Playing a little beat up, the Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team played with plenty of heart and found a way to capture a tie, 2-2, with Central Wyoming College in a Region IX conference contest Saturday at Landers Soccer Complex. Alieen Perez, who netted both goals in the second half, said they took steps in the right direction against Central Wyoming. “The team played very well,” the sophomore from Colorado said. “We all played our hearts off and even though we could’ve gotten a win, this is a closer step to where we want to be.”
  • WNCC women fall to Northwest 5-3

    The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team started strong and then faltered as Northwest College scored three second half goals to give Northwest the 5-3 win in both teams Region IX conference opener on Friday. The scoring in the first half was fast and furious for both squads as each team was answering each other’s goals. It didn’t take WNCC long to score as sophomore Tania Razo scored just nine minutes into the contest when she netted the opening goal off an assist from Yasmin Urbina.

    CASPER, Wyo. – Tania Razo scored two goals and the Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team posted a 4-0 shutout win over Central Wyoming College in a non-conference contest Monday in Casper, Wyoming. The Cougars took control of the game early with three goals in the first half and never looked back.

    CASPER, Wyo. – It has been two weeks since the Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team played an actual contest that counted when they tied Iowa Lakes Community College 3-3 on August 19. Saturday afternoon, the Cougar women competed for much of the contest as the Cougars trailed Casper just 2-0 at halftime, but by the end of the contest, the Thunderbirds scored five second-half goals to earn the 7-1 victory.

    STERLING, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College men’s and women’s soccer teams opened the season Saturday afternoon with different results. The Cougar women received two goals from sophomore Tania Razo and the Cougar women earned a 3-3 tie with Iowa Lakes Community College. The Cougar men were knotted with Iowa Lakes at halftime before Iowa Lakes scored a goal in the second half for the 2-1 win. The Cougar men will be back in action Monday at noon as they host Southeast Community College at the Landers Soccer Complex. The women were scheduled to play, but that match was canceled because Southeast didn’t have enough players to field a team.
  • WNCC women's soccer team young, will have alumni scrimmage Saturday

    The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team will be young, but with plenty of talent after graduating nine sophomores from a team that went 7-7 a year ago. This year, the Cougar women have four returners that saw plenty of action along with a good group of incoming freshmen to aim for a 10-win season. The last time the Cougar women had a 10-plus win season was in 2019 when they went 13-4. The women will see how they mesh this weekend when they have an alumni game on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Landers Soccer Complex and then they open the season for real on August 19 when they travel to Sterling, Colorado, to face Iowa Lakes Community College before hosting Southeast Community College on Monday, August 21 in a 10 a.m. start.
