WNCC, Northwest women tie

WNCC, Northwest women tie

The Western Nebraska Community College and Northwest College women's soccer teams didn't get anything solved Saturday afternoon at Landers Soccer Complex as the two teams ended with a 1-1 tie after two overtimes.

WNCC coach Todd Rasnic say some improvement in the team in today's play.

"I think we made a little bit of progress," he said. "We came back and we had a little bit more fight. We just have to pick up our ability to battle in games and win the 1v1 battles. If we can't do that it will be a tough road for us. I think they are starting to understand that there are a lot of freshmen playing this year and the physicality of the game has been a shock to them. I think as we move forward we can continue to progress if they get the message and continue to improve."

Saturday's contest was scoreless in the first half. Northwest scored first in the second half as Holly Burley scored in the 63rd minute. WNCC came back to tie the match at 1-1 seven minutes later as Eden Washington battled in the box and scored after fighting for the ball.

With just minutes left in regulation Juliana Stratford took a shot that was saved by the Northwest goalkeeper to force overtime.

in the first overtime period, Stratford had a shot that was saved, but there wasn't a lot of shots in the first 10 minutes.

The second 10 minutes, Northwest had four chances to win, but the Cougar defense held strong including some big saves from Cougar goalkeeper Allison Parker with some big saves.

Each team had 21 shots in the match. WNCC didn't have any corner kicks compared to four for Northwest.

The Cougars will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming, for an evening contest before traveling to Western Wyoming Community College on Friday. Both matches next week are Region IX contests.
