WNCC women tie Western Wyoming

The Western Nebraska Community College women's and men's soccer teams earned ties with Western Wyoming Community College on Friday at the Landers Soccer Complex.

The Cougar women received two goals from Eden Washington and tied the Mustangs 3-3 in double overtime.

Washington, who scored the first and second goals for the Cougar women, said they played pretty good with plenty of heart.

"I feel like we need the goals. We were down 2-0 in the first half but we didn't let that get our heads down," Washington said. "We came back and scored a goal. I think that picked our heads up and we had to fight. We knew that this game we couldn't lose. Even though we wanted to win, I think we are happy with the tie."

While it is disappointing that they couldn't get the win, Washington said in their mind they won because the Cougar team has been banged up. Friday, the Cougars suited up 13 players. The Cougars fight in the match was evident as both teams were battling.

"This game showed how much we wanted to win. We worked for each other," Washington said. "This game I feel like it the most we played as a team."

Western Wyoming struck first and it seemed as if the Mustangs might run away with the match. The Mustangs' Alyssia Lee scored first with just nine minutes gone in the match. Four minutes later, Lee scored again to put Western Wyoming up 2-0.

WNCC, however, didn't quite as they battled back to knot the score. Washington got the Cougars on the board first by taking a pass from Brittany Hunsley and pounded it into the net.

The game stayed 2-1 for a while. That was until Washington took another hot shot that rebounded off the goalkeeper. Shelby Neubert was in the right place at the right time as she calmly put the ball into the net to tie the game. Neither team scored again with a 2-2 tie at halftime.

The second half saw Western Wyoming go up 3-2 on a Madisyn Cantrell shot with 32 minutes left in the game. WNCC kept battling and managed to tie the match with 12:31 to play as Hunsley fed Washington with a perfect pass and the sophomore from London, England, pounded the ball into the net for her second goal.

Neither team scored in the first or second overtime. Washington, however, had two good shots in the second overtime period that just went high and wide.

Western Wyoming outshot WNCC 30-26. WNCC finished with three corner kicks while Western Wyoming had six.

Cougar goalkeeper Allison Parker had 14 saves in net.

The Cougar women will be back in action Saturday against Northeastern Junior College at noon at the Landers Complex. It will also be sophomore recognition for the seven sophomores Janie McAmis, Janalynn McKay, Shelby Neubert, Emily Henshaw, Eden Washington, Sierra Benavidez, and Jesse Michel.

Washington said they will be ready for Saturday.

"This game shows that we can do it. SO tomorrow's game has to be a win," the sophomore said. "Saturday will be our last league game before we go and play Otero [in regionals]."
