WNCC women's soccer falls to Otero

The Western Nebraska Community College women's soccer team played well, but didn't have enough depth in falling to Otero Junior College 4-1 in Region IX South action Friday at the Landers Soccer Complex.

Otero, 4-1 on the season, had to battle to pick up the conference win. Both teams were playing tight defense early on. The Rattlers scored first with 21 minutes to play in the opening half on a goal by Chloe Craig.

The Rattlers made it 2-0 six minutes later on a Adriana Smith.

WNCC kept fighting, however. Courtney Nelson got the Cougars on the scoreboard by booting in a shot from about 18 feet out to cut the lead in half with 2:13 left in the opening half. That is where the two teams entered intermission.

Otero added two more goals in the second half for the final margin. The Rattlers got a coach from Stormi Garcia six minutes into the half and then Elena Gurule capped off the scoring with 24:40 to play.

WNCC had four shots on goal while Otero had 11 shots on goal. Jordyn Rivera had six saves in net.

The WNCC women look to get back on track by hosting Trinidad State on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The Trojans topped Northeastern Junior College 2-0 on Friday.
