WNCC women shutout Central-Columbus 5-0

The Western Nebraska Community College women's soccer team had five different players score a goal in registering a 5-0 Region IX shutout over Central Community College-Columbus in the Cougars home opener Saturday at Landers Soccer Complex.

WNCC assistant coach Henri Prieels said both teams played well. Prieels said the Cougar women had a nice offensive output in the first half, scoring four goals.

"We controlled the game and finished what we needed to do. We then controlled the rest of the game," Prieels said. "The way we played was great because it gave us a chance to play everybody, I thought it was a well-controlled game on their part."

Prieels was especially pleased with five different players scoring a goal.

"We created many chances [of scoring] and it wasn't just one player; it was a good team effort," Prieels said.

The WNCC women took control early with four, first-half goals. Thais Nayara opened the scoring taking a pass from Destiny Mueller and hit the back of the net just 10 minutes in the match.

Mueller picked up another assist seven minutes later as she found Ana Lopez for the 2-0 lead.

Jackie Valericiano followed Mueller's assist parade with two of her own in the first half. Valericiano found Caroline Vieira with 20 minutes left for a 3-0 lead and then picked up her second assist with 14 minutes left in the half when she found Perla Guzman for the 4-0 halftime lead.

WNCC scored just one goal in the second half, an unassisted boot from Mueller that came just five minutes into the half.

WNCC finished with 21 shots compared to four for Central. WNCC had five corner kicks in the contest. Laramie Lake and Melody Kaup each spent a half in net with Kaup recording two saves.

WNCC, 7-1 overall and 3-1 in conference, will return to the pitch next weekend when they host Gillette College on Friday and Sheridan College on Saturday.
