WNCC tops McCook, moves up to No. 3 in polls

                MCCOOK -- The Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team learned earlier in the day that they moved up to No. 3 in the NJCAA Division I polls.

                That evening, the Cougars captured their 21st victory of the season with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-17 win over McCook Community College at McCook.

                The win was definitely a team effort as WNCC had nine different players notch a kill and another 10 players get at least a dig.

                Barbara Rabanal had another stellar performance from the front row. The freshman from Lima, Peru, finished with 13 kills and one solo block. Rabanal also had four digs.

                WNCC also received seven kills and three blocks from Lara Picht and six kills and a solo block from Jady Gerotto.

                The Cougars also received five kills each from Keala Kaio-Perez and Santanna Mitchell.

                Defensively, the Cougars were led by Fabiana Andrade with six digs, followed by Fuatino Manu with five, Rabanal with four, and three each from Kaio-Perez, Katy Ernest, and Alwaise Villa.

                Andrade also had a double-double of 14 points and 32 set assists. The sophomore setter also had two aces.

                Also for the Cougars, Kaio-Perez finished with 10 points and an ace, and Rabanal had nine points and three aces. Rabanal also had two aces.

                The Cougars, 21-3, will be off for a week when they return home to host Otero Junior College, Lamar Community College, and Trinidad State Junior College in conference games beginning next week Thursday.

                In the latest polls, WNCC moved to No. 3, up one spot from last week after going 6-0 last week including wins over rated Casper and Northwest Wyoming. The College of Southern Idaho, who the Cougars defeated in Salt Lake City, remains No. 1 followed by Tyler Junior College. Northwest moves up from No. 5 to No. 4 while Hutchinson cracks the top five at No. 5.

                Iowa Western Community College, who was No. 3 last week, falls to No. 10. Sante Fe College and Central Florida College were the biggest movers this week. Santa Fe moved up nine spots from 18 to No. 9 this week, while Central Florida jumped six spots from 17th to No. 11.
