Three Cougars make OWH All-Nebraska JUCO team

More honors for the Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team after a season that saw the Cougars finish runner-up at the NJCAA national tournament. This time, six Cougar volleyball players were honored by the Omaha World Herald after the newspaper published it's All-Nebraska JUCO team on Thursday.

Fabiana Andrade, the sophomore setter, picked up more accolades on the team. After earning NJCAA and AVCA First Team honors and a member of the NJCAA national tournament, Andrade was made honorary captain for the all-Nebraska JUCO team.

Andrade, who was the quarterback of the team, is joined by her teammates Jady Gerotto and Barbara Rabanal-Briceno on the first team, while Keala Kaio-Perez, Lara Picht, and Shaney Tiumalu all earned honorable mention honors.

WNCC head coach Binny Canales said Andrade didn't know the word quit.

"She doesn't know what the word quit means," the second year coach said. "She goes after it. We many down and it seems hopeless, but she finds a way to get us back in it. That is a great tribute to her."

Andrade's 2-year career at WNCC was stellar. Andrade finished with 3,165 set assists, 88 aces, 731 digs, and 89 blocks.

This past season, the 5-foot-7 setter from Sao Paulo, Brazil, finished with 1,810 set assists, 94 kills, 60 ace serves, 32 blocks, and 408 digs in her two seasons.

Andrade's sophomore season was one of greatness as she achieved a lot. Canales said that as a freshman, Andrade didn't earn any all-American honors. Things all changed her sophomore year                 "Fabi, last year, was just all-region and didn't get on any all-American team recognition," Canales said. "And for her to get on both of them (NJCAA and AVCA) is amazing. Fabi was the heart of the team. She kept us in many games as she tracked down balls when our passing was off and kept us in system."

Andrade has already decided on her college for next season, after verbally committing to Cal State Bakersfield and former Cougar coach Giovana Melo. In fact, before Melo left for Cal State Bakersfield in March of 2014, Andrade already committed to come to WNCC and she honored that committed to spend two seasons at WNCC.

Canales said that he has coached plenty of great setters, and Andrade is definitely among the best on his list.

"She was great when she got here (as a freshman) and she has got a lot better and understands the foot work a little bit more," she said. "She is one of the most complete players that I have worked with and I have had a lot of all-American setters."

All six members of the volleyball team that received recognition were instrumental in the Cougars success this season. Canales said that any honors that they receive is a testament of the work they put in and the school and community needs to be proud.

"The kids take a lot of pride in the honors that they get and this one should be another one that they should be very proud of," he said. "There are a lot of teams in Nebraska and to be picked from that, it is great."

Other first team JUCO members included Central-Columbus' Payton Chohon, Riley Dorn, and Alyssa Thege; Southeast's Amara Meeks; and Northeast's Meagan Backer.

Another former Cougar was also honored on the All-Nebraska team. Former Cougar Gaby Varela, who played for WNCC in 2013, earned honorable mention honors in NCAA Division II. Varela played last year for Chadron State College.

Chadron State had three other representatives on the honorable mention Division II along with Varela in Rudy Leasau, Sina Mauga, and Lelalelei Nomura.
